Abstract

Based on the Cloud-to-ground(CG)lighting location data,the tropical cyclone(TC)intensity and track data from Guangdong Typhoon Real-time Release System,the characteristics of lightning activity and its relationship with the evolution of 37 TCs that made landfall in Guangdong from 2006 to 2018 are analysed and studied.The results show that the positive lightning ratio in the TC core area is higher than that in the outer rainband.The TC lightning activity is mainly related to the lightning activity in the outer rainband,and it is not the case that the stronger the TC intensity level,the more active the lightning activity.When a TC is in the Rapid Intensity(RI)stage,the lightning density is the highest in the inner core and the lowest in the outer rainbands,while the opposite is true in the rapid weakening(RW)stage.The comparison of lightning activity intensity in different TC sectors has reference value for the change in TC intensity.The burst of lightning activity in the eyewall before TC landfall,accompanied by intensity enhancement,may herald a continuation of TC intensity deepening or an impending maximum intensity.After TC landfall,the burst of lightning activity in the eyewall indicates a sustained weakening of TC intensity.When a TC is in a stable phase,the eyewall lightning outbursts with high positive flash rates indicate that the TC may have reached its maximum intensity,while no significant change in the TC characteristics is observed when the positive flash rate is low.In addition,the burst of lightning in the eyewall may also foreshadow an impending change in the TC track,at which time the eyewall lightning tends to be distributed in the direction where the TC is about to turn.
