Abstract

Based on the low-pressure track dataset and ERA5 reanalysis data,this study systematically analyzes the spatiotemporal characteristics of the Beibu Gulf low vortices(BGLV)from 1979 to 2019,and investigates their relationship with rainstorms through a typical case.The results show that BGLV primarily manifests as locally generated low vortices(46.5%)within the Beibu Gulf and westward-migrating low vortices(40.2%),with peak activity from May to September.These low vortices exhibit an annual mean frequency of 3.1 per year and an average lifespan of 4 days.A representative case in late July 2002 demonstrated that a locally generated low vortex within the Beibu Gulf caused persistent heavy rainfall along the southern Guangxi coast through synergistic effects with a vertical structure characterized by low-level convergence and upper-level divergence,moisture flux convergence,and the Western Pacific Subtropical High and cold air masses.The enhanced diabatic vertical circulations of the BGLV activities drove the continuous enhancement of heavy rainfall,and the water vapour transport was dominated by the warm and humid airflow from the Indian Ocean-Arabian Sea-Bay of Bengal,which provided sufficient water vapour conditions for the heavy rainfall.
