Adsorption of activated carbon fiber combined with ultraviolet catalytic oxidation for the treatment of organic pollutants in secondary effluent

Abstract
The reuse of secondary effluent from sewage treatment plants can effectively alleviate water shortage,however,conventional advanced treatment processes exhibit poor performance in removing organic pollutants.This study combines ultraviolet(UV)-based advanced oxidation technology with activated carbon fiber(ACF)adsorption to investigate the synergistic effects of the adsorption-oxidation coupling system on the reduction of organic matter and the removal of trace emerging pollutants in secondary effluent.The results indicate that UV-catalyzed peroxydisulfate(PDS)oxidation has a low mineralization rate for refractory organic matter,while ACF adsorption merely transfers rather than degrades organic pollutants.The UV-PDS-ACF combined process extends the service life of the adsorbent and enhances the efficient removal of emerging pollutants.The average removal rate of 12 typical trace emerging pollutants-including antibiotics,anti-inflammatory drugs,antihypertensive and lipid-lowering drugs,and stimulants-reached 83.8%.The three-dimensional fluorescence spectroscopy analysis revealed that the UV-PDS-ACF system achieved removal rates of 70.4%for humic acid-type organic matter and 73.0%for microbial metabolites in secondary effluent.Adsorption and oxidation follow distinct degradation and transformation mechanisms for organic pollutants.Their integration enhances treatment efficiency,improves effluent quality,and ensures the safety of reclaimed wastewater.关键词
