On the Three Obstacles in the Study of the Family-State Relations

Abstract
Understanding the relationship between the family and the political community in traditional Chinese society faces three obstacles.Firstly,the modern dichotomy framework of"civil society-state"has resulted in the family no longer being considered part of the political domain.Secondly,since the Enlightenment,Western perceptions of the family in traditional Chinese society have influenced the modern Chinese academia,creating an obscuration.Thirdly,the research thinking of structuralism has made it difficult to fully discuss the issue of the"family-state relationship"in traditional Chinese society.These three obstacles are interwoven,impeding the full development of the Sino-Western dialogue on the relationship between the family and the political community.This article attempts to clarify the process by which Western academia influenced the Chinese scholarship,highlights how the"modeling the state after the family"theory transcends structuralist methodologies,and rediscovers the family's positive role in political communities while emphasizing the unique function of classical Chinese family-state relations.关键词
