Development status of research on Yellow River culture based on a two-dimensional framework of time and topic

Abstract
The Yellow River culture,as an important part of the Chinese civilization,is the root and soul of the Chinese nation.Conducting comprehensive research on Yellow River culture is essential to advance its protection,inheritance,and promotion,thereby supporting the high-quality development in the Yellow River basin. However,existing research mainly focuses on specific aspects,such as regional archaeology,tourism development and heritage preservation,with limited attention to broader trends.Only a small minority of macro-level studies exist,and even they often suffer from incomplete literature coverage and narrow analytical scope,making it challenging to provide a comprehensive view of the development of Yellow River culture.To address this issue,this study analyzes 828 high-quality articles from 1947 to 2023 across two dimensions including time and topic to clarify the trajectory of research on Yellow River culture and offer a valuable reference for future studies. The findings reveal that Yellow River cultural research has progressed through four main stages in the temporal dimension:the archaeological research stage,the expansion stage,the integration stage,and the flourishing stage.Research was in its early stages from 1947 to around 1980,with studies focusing on archaeological discoveries.Between 1980 and 2000,research entered the expansion stage,focusing on more diverse topics,including comparative studies of regional cultures and initial exploration into the utilization and preservation of Yellow River culture.From around 2000 to 2018,research progressed into the integration stage,encompassing topics such as archaeology,utilization,and preservation,with attention to both historical content and contemporary value.In 2019,research on Yellow River culture entered a flourishing stage driven by the national strategy for ecological protection and high-quality development in the Yellow River basin.The number of studies increased significantly,and these studies explored many new aspects of Yellow River culture.Overall,research on Yellow River culture has shifted from focusing on its archaeological and cultural value to its economic value and,more recently,to its diverse values. Thematically,Yellow River culture research includes four main topics:(1)excavation and organization,(2)development and utilization,(3)preservation and inheritance,(4)promotion.In excavation and organization,early research mainly focused on analyzing Yellow River culture through temporal and spatial dimensions,while later studies expanded to include ecological and cultural heritage dimensions.Early studies mainly summarized the essence of Yellow River culture,while later research provided more in-depth theoretical analysis.In terms of development and utilization,early research focused on the tourism value of Yellow River culture,while later studies explored broader values,like promoting ecological protection and national unity.In terms of preservation and inheritance,early research primarily focused on protecting cultural heritage,while later studies shifted to developing targeted protection strategies and promoting coordinated preservation across the entire Yellow River basin.In terms of promotion,research mainly focused on the content and channels of promoting Yellow River culture. Overall,while there is a wealth of research on Yellow River culture,several major issues remain.First,there is insufficient systematic organization of cultural resources.Second,administrative boundaries have hindered cross-regional cooperation.Third,the theoretical foundation for Yellow River culture research requires strengthening.Fourth,there has been limited application of modern technologies in Yellow River culture research.Future studies should focus on improving resource organization,enhancing regional collaboration,deepening theoretical frameworks,and integrating new technologies.关键词
