Abstract

The Middle Route of the South-to-North Water Transfers Project is a major strategic infrastructure project aimed to solve the water shortage problem in Northern China.Since the opening of the Middle Route,the water quality of the main channel had always been maintained at Class Ⅰ-Ⅱ.However,the permanganate index usually exceeds 2 mg/L at specific times or sections,and becomes the main limiting factor for water quality to reach Class Ⅰ.Therefore,the permanganate index has also become a key focus of water quality management for the main channel. This study analyzed the correlation between different algal densities and permanganate index using long-term monitoring data from 30 water quality sections along the main channel,as well as the indoor cultivation experiments to investigate the impact of algal growth on the variation of permanganate index. The results of channel monitoring showed that the permanganate index was closely related to the density of algae and had obvious threshold effects.Both the permanganate index and algal density increased along the whole canal,and the algal density reached its peak from July to September every year,which was synchronized with the seasonal change of the number of sections with permanganate index exceeding 2 mg/L.The algal density in Taochai,Shahenan,Zhengwan and Zhanghe sections had a weak effect on the permanganate index(P>0.01),and the correlation was significant in Da'anshe sections(P<0.01).The correlation was enhanced when the algal density was greater than 1000×104 L-1 in Xiheishan and Huinanzhuang sections.Furthermore,the correlation was decreased when the density of algae was less than 1 000×104 L-1,but was not significant in the section of Tianjin Outer Huanhe River(P<0.01).The laboratory culture experiment showed that the growth course of algae was highly synchronized with the change process of permanganate index,which was the main source of increase of the permanganate index.In the algal culture experiment,the permanganate index increased rapidly in the logarithmic growth stage,and the correlation between the growth stable stage and the decline stage was weakened.The flow time of the total main channel corresponds to the growth cycle of algae,and the organic matter produced by algae growth and metabolism in the logarithmic stage had an important effect on the permanganate index of the channel.The release rate of permanganate index was 0.017 mg/106 L-1,and the average contribution of algae to the increase of permanganate index was more than 50%. The study shows that planktic algae is the main factor affecting the permanganate index of the total main canal,and the results can provide a basis for the establishment of algal control threshold.
