Abstract

The extracellular polymeric substances(EPS)secreted by microorganisms are widely distributed in the surface layer of sediment.However,the impact of low-concentration EPS on the bedform and the erosion of sandy beds,and the development of sand ripples and their reaction to the organic matter burial remains un-clear.A flume experiments was conducted,and the results indicate that the content of EPS in the surface layer significantly affects the development rate and total erosion of the bed,and this influence shows a nonlinear re-lationship with EPS concentration.The low-concentration(0.005%)EPS inhibits the scale of ripple develop-ment,but exacerbates the overall bed erosion(with erosion increasing by 38%);the high-concentration EPS demonstrates a pronounced biological stabilization effect,substantially suppressing the occurrence of rippled-bed and erosion(when EPS concentration reaches 0.1%,erosion amount decreased by 92%).Simultaneous-ly,low-concentration(0.005%,0.02%)EPS facilitates stable burial and protection of organic matter in the sub-surface layer during the migration of ripples and sediment transport.
