The impact of filter media and plants on water quality in traditional fish tank aquaculture
摘要
Abstract
To investigate the effects of filter media and floating plants on water quality in traditional fish tank aquaculture,a culture experiment using Oryzias latipes was conducted in traditional fish tanks configured with volcanic rock, biofilter rings,Salvinia natans+volcanic rock, and Pistia stratiotes+volcanic rock, respectively for 28 days.A control group without filter media or plants was included for comparison. The experiment involved tracking and monitoring changes in key water quality parameters, including ammonia nitrogen(NH3-N),nitrite(NO2--N),nitrate(NO3--N),dissolved oxygen(DO),pH,total nitrogen(TN),and chemical oxygen demand(COD).Additionally, the growth conditions of the organisms were recorded. The results showed that the survival rates of O.latipes in the S.natans group, volcanic rock group, and biofilter ring group were significantly higher than those in the P.stratiotes group and the control group(P<0.05).The P.stratiotes group had the lowest sur-vival rate, which was not significantly different from the control group(P>0.05).Throughout the experiment, the ammonia nitrogen concentration in the volcanic rock group was significantly lower than that in the biofilter ring group and the control group(P<0.05).Mixed groups(S.natans+volcanic rock group and P.stratiotes+volcanic rock group)had significantly lower ammonia nitrogen levels compared to the filter media-only groups(P<0.05),with ammonia nitrogen levels initially rising and then declining in all groups.Between days 4 and 12,the nitrite concentration in the S.natans group was significantly higher than that in the P.stratiotes and volcanic rock groups(P<0.05),but later decreased to lower levels. In contrast, the nitrite concentration in the P.stratiotes group surpassed that of the S.natans group after day 12,peaking at(0.83±0.13)mg/L on day 24 before rapidly decli-ning.The nitrite concentrations in the volcanic rock and biofilter ring groups reached their highest levels on days 20 and 24,respectively,but showed no significant difference except on day 20(P>0.05),with both peaks remai-ning below 0.1 mg/L.Nitrate accumulation was only observed in the S.natans group between days 4 and 16,while no nitrate accumulation was detected in the other groups during the experiment. At the end of the experi-ment,the S.natans group and the P.stratiotes group had significantly lower TN and COD levels compared to the other groups(P<0.05),but there was no significant difference between the two groups(P>0.05).The TN and COD levels in the volcanic rock group were significantly lower than those in the biofilter ring group and the control group(P<0.05).The results demonstrate that volcanic rock has superior nitrogen adsorption capabilities, and the addition of S.natans effectively improves water quality in traditional fish tanks. The optimal combination was S.natans+volcanic rock, which enabled the water quality to reach a stable state most rapidly.关键词
