Quantitative study on carbon footprint of urban household textile care
摘要
Abstract
The impact of clothing and footwear on the global climate is about 1.3 billion tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent, and the carbon emissions from consumer care during the use phase account for 33% to 50% of the greenhouse gas emissions of textiles throughout the life cycle.Quantitative estimation of these emissions is significant for reducing carbon emissions from the source. The cumulative effect of the frequency of cleaning behavior results in energy consumption, making it possible for textiles to produce more greenhouse gases during household use than any other part of the life cycle.Estimating, controlling, and reducing greenhouse gas emissions in consumer use may be one of the potential ways to effectively reduce the environmental impact of the textile industry's life cycle. Some progress has been made in estimating and factor researching household greenhouse gas emissions, complex regression models with many variables, neural networks based on big data, and architecture design and transformation techniques based on Internet of Things technologies.Still, the key to achieving these technologies lies in the accuracy of the data.Through relatively accurate data collection and practical framework construction analysis, this study obtains the influencing factors of carbon emissions in the use stage of residential textiles and the impact degree of each factor on carbon emissions to put forward a scientific plan to reduce carbon emissions in the use stage of textiles and provide ideas for green emission reduction. First, based on the consumer lifestyle method model and the theory of the textile washing ecosystem, this study established a research framework. This study also estimated the respondents' carbon footprint of the washing machine type, standard washing procedures, and brand. Then, this study developed a new measurement tool to study the impact of various factors described in the theoretical framework on greenhouse gas(GHG)emissions during textiles, covering relevant aspects of consumer behavior and preferences.Based on the modified CLA model and comprehensive literature review method,a questionnaire was designed to measure the formative structure and indicators. In this study, based on the life cycle assessment(LCA)method, the assessment methods and indicators of greenhouse gas emissions in the use stage of household textiles were developed.According to the distribution proportion of household numbers in each administrative region of Shanghai,600 questionnaires were distributed online and offline using a random sampling method for data collection. To estimate the stability of the accounting results of carbon footprint and the influence of various factors on carbon footprint further, this study used uncertainty and sensitivity analysis tools based on the Monte Carlo method to analyze the calculation results.Based on the LCA method,a theoretical framework was created to quantify the carbon footprint of residents in the textile use stage through a scale.A sensitivity analysis of the factors affecting carbon emissions in the textile use stage was carried out to provide ideas for reducing carbon emissions. The estimated carbon footprint of summer laundry per kilogram of household life cycle in Shanghai was between 1.23 and 33.02.The sensitivity analysis results showed that the carbon footprint of urban home textile care was most affected by electricity consumption and nursing frequency, which was 8.9 times the sum of the sensitivity of detergent dosage and water consumption to the carbon footprint. The uncertainty of carbon footprint estimation comes from the randomness of each parameter variable, including the number of household washings, the amount of detergent used, the amount of water used, and the amount of electricity used;the results of correlation analysis showed that there was a weak positive correlation between the amount of detergent and the active selectivity of detergent, the frequency of washing and the number of preschool children. The influence of consumers on the carbon footprint of household clothing and textile care is more complex. The results of exploratory factor analysis show that the potential characteristic factors of consumers affecting the carbon footprint include demographic factors, gender, detergent consumption preference, education level, income and consumption, textile care behavior and household residential area,up to 7 or more. This study quantifies the carbon emissions in the household use stage of clothing and textiles, analyzes the influencing factors of carbon emissions, provides ideas for the research on carbon emissions of textile household cleaning, and provides a specific theoretical basis for the formulation of guidance and policies for green cleaning and care behavior in the consumption stage of textiles for the textile and clothing industry. It will help to promote the formation of scientific and reasonable washing habits for home textile care and,and at the same time, point out the direction of innovation for home appliance and detergent companies to reduce the total carbon footprint.关键词
