Abstract
Potassium periodate(KIO4)was used to modify bamboo powder plant fibers by selectively oxidizing the hydroxyl groups(—OH)on the surface of the plant fibers,resulting in the preparation of carbonylated plant fibers(CMPE).The CMPE was then compounded with polyethylene(PE)to produce carbonylated plant fiber polyethylene composites(PE/CMPF),and their properties were tested.The results showed that the CMPE reduced their apparent surface polarity while increasing their internal polarity.The interfacial compatibility of the PE/CMPF composites was improved,and their mechanical strength was significantly enhanced after carbonylation.The tensile strength increased from 15.4 MPa for the unmodified composites to 17.9 MPa when the amount of KIO4 was 0.1%.The flexural strength and flexural modulus increased from 19.4,562 MPa,respectively,for the unmodified composites to 21.2,606 MPa,respectively,when the amount of KIO4 was 0.5%.When the amount of KIO4 was less than 0.2%,the elongation at break remained almost unchanged.However,when the amount of KIO4 exceeded 0.2%,the elongation at break decreased significantly from around 500%.The impact strength increased from 45.1 kJ/m2 for the unmodified composites to 46.4 kJ/m2 when the amount of KIO4 was 0.1%.When the amount of KIO4 exceeded 0.1%,the impact strength decreased rapidly.关键词
