Combined Toxicity of Tributyl Phosphate and Levofloxacin on Microcystis aeruginosa and Scenedesmus obliquus

Abstract
Organophosphate flame retardants(OPFRs)are widely used in industrial materials to reduce fire risk and as stabilizers.Aquatic ecosystems are the primary sink of OPFRs,which often coexist with antibiotics and other pollutants in the water environment.However,studies on the combined toxicity of OPFRs and antibiotics to microscopic primary producers are lacking.In this study,Microcystis aeruginosa(a common cyanobacteria)and Scenedesmus obliquus(a common green algae)were selected as test organ-isms,and we explored individual and combined toxicities of Tributyl phosphate(TBP),a typical OPFR,and levofloxacin(LEV),a typical antibiotic,on the two test organisms.The individual toxicities of TBP and LEV were tested using the single toxicity test method with 12 concentration treatments and the direct equipartition ray method to test their combined toxicity,with TBP to LEV concentration ratios of 1:5,2:4,3:3,4:2 and 5:1.The independent action model(IA model)was employed to discern the mode of joint tox-ic action and evaluate its severity,with a focus on exploring the response of simultaneous exposure to TBP and LEV.The LC50 of TBP toward M.aeruginosa and S.obliquus were 2.0×10-6 and 6.7×10-5 mol/L,respectively.The LC50 of LEV against M.aeruginosa and S.obliquus were 3.4×10-7 and 4.3×10-6 mol/L,respectively.Thus,M.aeruginosa is more sensitive to TBP and LEV than S.obliquus.The results of the combined exposure based on an equipartition ray design shows that the combined toxicity intensity de-creased with decreasing LEV concentration,and the toxic effect on M.aeruginosa was higher than that of S.obliquus.In addition,the toxic mode of the combined exposure to both test organisms was concentra-tion-dependent,showing synergism at low concentration and antagonism at high concentration,and the toxic intensity varied with the ratio of TBP to LEV concentration.There was a positive correlation be-tween the proportion of LEV and the toxicity of the mixture,and a negative correlation between the pro-portion of TBP and toxicity of the mixture.Both individually and combined,TBP and LEV exhibited hor-mesis on algal growth,i.e.,low concentrations promoted growth while high concentrations inhibited growth.The results of this study provide data support for evaluating the toxicity of organophosphorus flame retardants and antibiotics to aquatic organisms and their environmental risks.关键词
