Review of the Inhibitory Effects and Mechanisms of Four Types of Antibiotics on Algal Growth

Abstract
In this study,we systematically reviewed the inhibitory effects and underlying mechanisms of four types of antibiotics(sulfonamides,tetracyclines,macrolides,and quinolones)on algal growth,aiming to provide critical insights for ecological risk assessment and management of antibiotic pollution in aquat-ic ecosystems.Results show that macrolide antibiotics(e.g.,clarithromycin,erythromycin)exhibit the most significant inhibitory effects on algae growth,with EC50 ranging from 0.002 to 0.034 mg/L,followed by quinolones(EC50:0.021-0.062 mg/L)and tetracyclines(EC50:1.82-4.195 mg/L),whereas sulfonamides demonstrate the lowest toxicity(EC50:6.58-8.19 mg/L).Antibiotics inhibited algae growth by inducing production of reactive oxygen species(ROS),triggering oxidative stress in algal cells,damaging cellular structures,and interfering with photosynthesis and energy metabolism.Additionally,due to their specific chemical structures and mechanisms of action,certain antibiotics can also affect gene expression related to DNA replication,repair,and folate synthesis,further suppressing algal growth and reproduction.Future research should prioritize investigations of combined antibiotic toxicity,the effects of metabolic products,and ecological responses across diverse algal species in order to comprehensively evaluate environmental risks posed by antibiotic mixture pollution.关键词
