Fish Species Composition and Diversity in the Lechang Section of Wujiang River

Abstract
Wujiang River is a first-level tributary of the upper Beijiang River in the Pearl River basin and the Lechang section has undergone extensive cascaded hydropower station development since the 1980s,the largest beginning operation in 2013.In this study,we analyzed fish community structure in the Lechang section after cascaded hydropower station development,focusing on interannual changes in fish composition,species diversity,dominant species,resource status and changes in important economic and rare fish species.We aimed to provide basic data for conserving fish species diversity for the Lechang sec-tion and other reaches of Beijiang River affected by water conservancy projects.The analysis was based on 17 fish surveys at 13 sampling sites in the Lechang section from 2013 to 2021,as well as historical lit-erature,abundance-biomass comparison curves and biomass spectra.Results show that a total of 121 fish species belonging to 18 families and 5 orders were collected during the surveys,with absolute dominance by Cypriniformes(86 species,71.07%).A species list of fish in the Lechang section was then complied based on a literature review,and it included a total of 159 species from 23 families and 7 orders.Com-pared with historical data,a notable change in species composition was the significant increase in exotic fish species:1 species recorded during 1981-1982,7 species during 2005-2009,and 13 species in this study.The dominant and common species has changed from river-type fishes that prefer flowing water(Spinibarbus denticulatus and Sinilabeo decorus)to lake-type fishes preferring static water(four major Chinese carps,Cyprinus carpio and Pseudohemiculter dispar).Natural migratory fish species,such as Anguilla japonica,were not collected in this study or in the surveys of 2005-2009,indicating that natural migratory fish species may no longer inhabit this section.Fish biodiversity was still high in the Lechang reach,but an overall decline was obvious.The abundance-biomass comparison curve and biomass spec-trum analysis revealed that the W statistic values of the fish communities were negative and the slopes of the normalized biomass spectra were less than-1 in 2013 and during 2020-2021.These results indicate significant fish community disturbance during these years,and that biomass was primarily concentrated within the smaller body weight intervals.Overall,the fish community in the Lechang section has main-tained high species diversity,but stability is poor and miniaturization is obvious.关键词
