Abstract

Coilia brachygnathus is a small freshwater commercial fish species,primarily distributed in the middle and lower Yangtze River and associated lakes.In this study,a seasonal survey of C.brachyg-nathus was conducted in Sanjiao Lake of Wuhan City during 2021-2022.The stable isotopes of carbon and nitrogen(δ13C,δ15N)were measured in order to determine the trophic level,trophic niche and sea-sonal variation rules of C.brachygnathus.Our aim was to understand the position and role of C.brachyg-nathus in the food web of urban lakes to support the scientific management of fishery resources.The δ13C value of C.brachygnathus in Sanjiao Lake ranged from-27.69‰to-23.99‰,with an average value of-25.96‰±1.04‰,and the δ15N value ranged from 14.72‰ to 18.52‰,with an average value of 16.77‰±1.00‰.The δ13C value of C.brachygnathus in spring was significantly lower than in other sea-sons(P<0.01),while the δ15N value was significantly higher than in summer and autumn(P<0.01).Pear-son correlation analysis shows that the δ13C value of C.brachygnathus was negatively correlated with body length while the δ15N value was positively correlated with the body length,except in spring.The tro-phic level of C.brachygnathus in the Sanjiao Lake ranged from 3.45 to 4.56,with an average value of 4.05±0.29.There was a significant positive correlation between the trophic level of C.brachygnathus and the body length in all seasons(P<0.01),except spring.When the body length was less than 170 mm,the trophic level in summer and autumn was significantly higher than in spring and winter(P<0.01),but there was no significant difference between seasons when the body length was over 170 mm(P>0.05).The trophic niche index shows that the food sources of C.brachygnathus in summer and autumn were more extensive than in spring and winter.The trophic niche in spring did not overlap with that in other seasons,while the niche width was smaller than in other seasons.C.brachygnathusfeeding on zooplankton reduces algae grazing.We recommend controlling the C.brachygnathus population by harvesting or the release of higher trophic level piscivores in spring.
