Effects of Low Concentrations of Bisphenol A on the Growth and Reproduction of Vallisneria spinulosa

Abstract
Bisphenol A(BPA)is an emerging contaminant that widely occurrs in the environment.Evalu-ating the impact of BPA on the growth and reproduction of submerged macrophytes provides a reference for evaluating the potential risks of BPA exposure in freshwater ecosystems.In this investigation the sub-merged macrophyte,Vallisneria spinulosa,was selected for study,and we examined the effects of BPA ex-posure on the growth of V.spinulosa seedlings and the balance between plant growth and reproduction in mature individuals.Three BPA treatments(0.01,0.1 and 1 mg/L)and a control were labelled as I,Ⅱ,Ⅲand CK,with ten plants in each group and five repetitions per treatment.The experiments were carried out from May to October of 2021,and V.spinulosa seedlings with leaf number of 3 and leaf length of 4 cm were transplanted into plastic buckets under the following conditions:temperature,21.6-39.5℃;total ni-trogen,(1.4±0.4)mg/L;total phosphorus,(52.2±28.1)μg/L;water level,40 cm.The growth traits of the plants were recorded every two weeks,as were the reproductive traits after sex differentiation had oc-curred.BPA exposure reduced both the growth and survival of V.spinulosa seedlings,and the survival rate of seedlings decreased significantly in the higher BPA concentration treatments(Group II,88.0%and Group III,87.4%).Seedling leaf length reached the maximum value in all groups during the seventh week[CK,(37.0±7.6)cm;I,(28.5±5.4)cm,II,(33.0±6.4)cm;III,(33.2±5.8)cm)].Leaf length in Group I(0.01 mg/L)decreased by 15.0%,while the leaf number in Groups II and III decreased significantly.In terms of the mature plants,there were significant decreases in soluble sugars in the leaves and total carbon content,while total nitrogen content significantly increased[CK,(0.9±0.1)%;I,(1.3±0.2)%;Ⅱ,(1.0±0.1)%;Ⅲ,(1.1±0.1)%].The leaf growth traits(leaf morphology and biomass)did not differ among treatments.Con-sidering reproductive traits,the biomass of winter buds of asexual propagules decreased significantly in Group III,but the total carbon and nitrogen contents of winter buds did not differ significantly among the four groups.Based on the results,we concluded that high BPA concentrations caused significant stress to both seedlings and mature individuals of V.spinulosa.In particular,the reduction of winter bud biomass could have serious impacts on the aquatic food chain,such as to the migratory birds that use winter buds as a primary source of food.关键词
