Abstract

[Objective]This study investigates the effects of shrub-grass mixed vegetation coverage and slope on runoff and sediment yield of iron tailing slopes,reveals the law of rainfall on the occurrence of water and soil loss on iron tailing slopes,and provides a theoretical basis for controlling water and soil loss and for ecological restoration of iron tailing slopes.[Methods]Artificial rainfall simulation experiments were used to analyze runoff and sediment yield under different vegetation coverages(30%,60%,90%),slopes(20°,25°),and rainfall intensities(60 mm/h,120 mm/h).[Results]Given the same rainfall intensity,an increase of shrub-grass mixed vegetation coverage could effectively delay the initiation time of runoff on iron tailing slopes,and the slope runoff rate and soil erosion rate decreased with the increase of vegetation coverage.The higher the vegetation coverage,the smaller the fluctuation range of runoff rate and erosion rate,and the more stable the erosion process.The effect of slope degree on runoff and sediment yield was opposite to that of vegetation coverage.The cumulative sediment yield increased with the increase of cumulative runoff,and there was a power function relationship between them(R2>0.96).[Conclusion]For iron tailing slopes,increasing the surface vegetation coverage can effectively reduce the runoff and sediment yield,and effectively prevent and control water and soil loss of the slopes.
