Abstract

[Objective]This study aims to explore the spatiotemporal variation of vegetation in the Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau under extreme drought events and its future recovery potential.This study also explores the drought adaptation mechanism and recovery ability of vegetation in the Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau,providing a theoretical basis and practical guidance for formulating scientific and reasonable ecological protection and recovery strategies in this area.[Methods]The study combined the self-calibrated Palmer Drought Severity Index(scPDSI)with the Enhanced Vegetation Index(EVI)to analyze drought events and vegetation losses in the Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau over the past 20 years.Vegetation recovery potential was also assessed using the similar habitat theory.[Results](1)The Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau experienced prolonged drought events in 2003-2005 and 2009-2012,with 2009 to 2012 being marked by extreme drought.(2)Despite the frequent occurrence of drought events,the vegetation on the Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau showed a significant greening trend,with the EVI trend rate reaching 0.021/10 a,and the most pronounced green occurred in the central area.(3)The vegetation loss caused by drought(significant decrease in EVI)was closely related to the severity of drought,with vegetation loss exceeding 50%in years with severe drought.(4)The spatial distribution of vegetation recovery potential was consistent with the distribution of climatic wetness and dryness.Vegetation recovery potential was higher in the eastern warm-humid areas and lower in the western warm-dry areas.Among different land use types,forest land had the highest recovery potential.[Conclusion]From 2001 to 2021,the scPDSI of the Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau fluctuated dramatically,with frequent droughts.From 2000 to 2023,the annual average value of EVI fluctuated with an upward trend,showing stage and spatial differences.Vegetation loss was relatively mild in general drought years,while the central region suffered severe damage during extreme drought years.Vegetation recovery potential was higher in the eastern humid areas than in the western dry areas.Different land use types showed different recovery potential due to factors such as water resource constraints,with the forest having the highest land recovery potential.
