Abstract

[Objective]This study aims to investigate the effects of different application ratios of biochar and water-retaining agents on the soil water-holding characteristics of urban green spaces,providing important reference for mitigating the rapid water infiltration of urban green space soil in Xining City and enhancing the efficient utilization of water resources.[Methods]Taking the green space soil of Huangshui National Wetland Park in Xining City as the research object,a combination of methods was employed,including field capacity measurement,soil water infiltration tests(using a one-dimensional vertical infiltration method),and soil moisture evaporation tests(using a gravimetric method).A two-factor completely randomized experiment was designed with three biochar application levels(0 g/kg,20 g/kg,40 g/kg,denoted as B0,B20,B40)and three water-retention agent application levels(0 g/kg,2 g/kg,4 g/kg,denoted as W0,W2,W4).An analysis was performed on the effects of different treatments on the field capacity of soil water,daily evaporation,cumulative evaporation,wetting front transport distance,and cumulative infiltration.Five models(Philip,Kostiakov,Mezencev,USDA-NRCS and Rose)were used for fitting analysis of soil water infiltration and evaporation processes,exploring how soil amendments influenced these dynamics.[Results](1)The combined application of biochar and water-retaining agent increased the field water-holding capacity of soil,among which B20W4 treatment had the most significant effect on increasing the field water-holding capacity(p<0.05);(2)Compared with the control,all treatments except B20W0 and B40W0 inhibited the infiltration of soil water,and B20W4 treatment reduced the cumulative infiltration of soil water by 22.44%and the transport distance of wet front by 26.42%;(3)Kostiakov model and USDA-NRCS model provided the best fit for the experimental data of soil water cumulative infiltration while the Rose model effectively captured the trends in cumulative evaporation across treatments,with determination coefficients(R2)exceeding 0.990 in all cases;(4)There was no significant difference in the cumulative evaporation of each treatment compared with the control over 15 days.[Conclusion]The optimal combination for improving the water-holding performance of urban green space soil in Xining is 20 g/kg of biochar and 4 g/kg of water-retaining agent.Therefore,applying appropriate amounts of biochar and water-retaining agent can effectively improve the poor soil water-holding capacity and mitigate the rapid infiltration in Xining green spaces.
