Abstract

The Changchun-Tonghua railway is a key regional high-speed railway corridor under China's Mid-to-Long Term Railway Network Plan and the 14th Five-Year Railway Development Plan.Its construction will critically enhance connectivity between the two vertical trunk corridors of Beijing-Harbin high-speed railway and Shenyang-Jiamusi high-speed railway in Northeast China and develop a rapid passenger transportation network throughout Jilin Province.This study analyzed and compared the feasibility of different construction and junction schemes to identify the optimal construction scheme and railway route.First,this study systematically evaluated the status quo and existing problems of the Changchun-Tonghua railway corridor by examining regional rail network status,project functional positioning,passenger flow characteristics along the line,and passenger and freight transport demand.Four alternative schemes were proposed:utilization of existing conventional railways for replacement,utilization of existing high-speed and intercity railways for traffic diversion,new construction of passenger-freight combined railway,and new construction of high-speed railway.After a comprehensive comparison considering construction feasibility,functional positioning,and coordination with existing rail network,the new construction of high-speed railways was recommended.On this basis,five junction sub-schemes for the new construction of high-speed railway were further proposed.A comprehensive comparison was conducted across multiple dimensions including functional requirements and rail network benefits,environmental protection,capacity adaptability,junction feasibility,and engineering costs.Finally,the construction scheme connecting to Changchun hub via Siping East Station on the Beijing-Harbin high-speed railway was determined as the optimal solution.The analysis of scheme comparison and selection showed that:(1)adopting the scheme of new construction of high-speed railway for the Changchun-Tonghua railway could alleviate capacity pressure on existing lines in the corridor and significantly boost tourism development in southwest Jilin Province.(2)The new construction scheme connecting to Changchun hub via Siping East Station on the Beijing-Harbin high-speed railway could better meet the demand of passenger flow and the coordination of the rail network,while reducing railway length by about 47.71 km and saving 6.896 billion yuan in engineering costs.
