Abstract

The electromechanical impedance method uses piezoelectric ceramics(PZT)sensors for structural health monitoring,often requiring a reasonable arrangement of multiple sensors.To overcome the interference of the disparities in the bonding layer and sensor parameters on damage identification results,this study proposed a novel damage-sensitive factor,namely the ratio of effective mechanical impedance(REMI).Firstly,the principal performance parameters were extracted from the low-frequency admittance signal of the free PZT;then,the REMI was developed by combining the aforementioned PZT parameters and admittance signals,the root mean square deviation was utilized as the index for quantifying damage;next,the arc positioning method was employed to provide a visual representation of the damage location;finally,the technique was employed in an experimental study to detect crack damage in rubber plates.The results demonstrate that REMI are more sensitive than the raw admittance signals in identifying the location of cracks in rubber plates and assessing the se-verity of damage,providing an effective approach for the comprehensive analysis of multi-sensor data based on PZT.
