Abstract

Greening tree species is an important part of urban forest,which is of great significance in impro-ving urban ecological environment.In order to explore the dust retention capacity of different urban green-ing tree species and their relationship with atmospheric particulate matter(APM)and leaf phenotypic characteristics,five common greening tree species(Osmanthus fragrans,Magnolia grandiflora,Rhododen-dron simsii,Prunus cerasifera and Cinnamomum camphora)occurring in two functional areas(traffic area with heavy air pollution and clean area such as school campus with slight air pollution)in Kunming City were taken as the research objects,and the retention characteristics of the leaves of the greening tree spe-cies on APM with different sizes were determined by water washing-filter membrane method.The APM re-tention regular pattern of the greening tree species and their relationships with APM and leaf phenotypic characteristics were analyzed,including total suspended particulate matter(TSP),large particulate matter(PM>10),inhalable particulate matter(PM10)and fine particulate matter(PM2.5).The results showed that 1)there was no significant difference in the APM within the same functional area.In the traffic area,APM was significantly higher than that in the clean area,and the contents of TSP,PM>10,PM10 and PM2.5 were 2.60-3.02 times that of the clean area.2)The dust retention capacity of the same tree species in different functional areas was significantly different,and the dust retention capacity of different tree species in the same functional area was significantly different(P<0.05).The dust retention amounts of different green tree species on TSP were in the order of O.fragrans(3.03±0.30)g/m2>R.simsii(2.79±0.46)g/m2>M.grandiflora(2.76±0.50)g/m2>P.cerasifera(1.54±0.32)g/m2>C.camphora(0.94±0.16)g/m2.O.fragrans presented the highest TSP and PM10 retention amounts in traffic area,1.08-3.23 and 1.02-3.85 times those of other green tree species,while R.simsii was found to have the highest PM10 and PM2.5 retention amounts,1.13-2.19 and 1.28-2.91 times those of other green tree species.3)The retention amounts in the leaves of greening tree species were mostly correlated with the contents of TSP,PM10 and PM2.5 in the environment.The leaf-pubescences were significantly correlated with the PM2.5 retention amounts,the leaf surface roughness was significantly correlated with the PM10 retention amount,and the leaf length-to-width ratio was significantly correlated with PM>10 and PM10 retention amounts.Therefore,O.fragrans,R.simsii and M.magnolia,which have leaf morphological characteristics such as leathery leaf length-to-width ratio,large leaf surface and rough hairy leaf surface,can be preferentially used for road greening to increase the dust retention benefit of greening trees.
