Abstract

As a special soil widely distributed in the northwest region,the engineering properties of loess are easily affected by acidic en-vironments.In order to analyze the influence of acid pollution on the hydro-mechanical properties of soil,for the undisturbed loess at a site in Jingyang County,Shaanxi Province,acid-polluted specimens were prepared using a 1.0 mol/L sulfuric acid solution.Combined with a one-dimensional pressure plate apparatus and a direct shear apparatus,comparative tests on water retention,compression,collaps-ibility and shear characteristics were carried out.The results show that acid pollution leads to the dissolution of calcium carbonate ce-ments,an increase in the content of clay particles and an increase in the liquid limit,significantly changing the physical properties of the soil.The air entry value of the acid-polluted loess decreased from 48 kPa to 3.2 kPa,and the dehumidification rate decreased from 0.17 to 0.14.The compression test found that the yield stress decreased from 30.5 kPa to 24.5 kPa after acid pollution,and the allowable structural space decreased.The collapsibility test shows that the maximum collapsibility coefficient of the acid-polluted loess increased by 18.7%compared with that of the unpolluted loess.The shear test shows that the effective friction angle increased from 25.3°to 28.2°af-ter acid pollution,and the total cohesion increased by 3.2 kPa under a suction of 200 kPa.The study shows that acid pollution signifi-cantly affects the hydro-mechanical properties of loess by changing the pore structure and the interaction between particles.The research results can provide an experimental basis for the prevention and control of loess engineering disasters in acid rain areas.
