Abstract

Accelerating the construction of digital villages is an important means to achieve carbon abatement in agriculture and rural areas.Based on panel data from 30 provinces in China from 2011 to 2021,this paper empirically tested the impact of digital village con-struction on carbon abatement costs in agriculture and rural areas,as well as its underlying mechanisms.The study revealed the follow-ing findings:① The carbon abatement costs in agriculture and rural areas in China showed an inverted N-shaped characteristic,de-creasing from 867 yuan/t in 2011 to 465 yuan/t in 2014,then increasing to 1 370 yuan/t in 2020,and subsequently decreasing again to 887 yuan/t in 2021.② From a regional comparison perspective,carbon abatement costs in agriculture and rural areas in Hainan,Ningx-ia,and Shanxi was relatively high,with relatively low carbon emissions and limited potential for carbon abatement.Jiangxi,Anhui,Sich-uan,Hunan,Zhejiang,and Guangdong had relatively low carbon emission abatement costs but exhibited relatively large carbon emis-sions,indicating significant potential for future carbon abatement.Hubei and Jiangsu provinces had high carbon abatement costs and emissions,with substantial potential for carbon abatement,although they were constrained by carbon abatement costs.③ Digital village construction significantly reduced carbon abatement costs in agriculture and rural areas.This conclusion still held after conducting vari-ous robustness tests,including the substitution and lag of core explanatory variables,as well as the instrumental variable method.④ Heterogeneity testing found that digital village construction significantly reduced carbon emission abatement costs in both non-grain producing and grain producing areas,with a greater reduction observed in non-grain producing areas.Additionally,digital village con-struction significantly reduced carbon emission abatement costs in the eastern,northeastern,and central regions,whereas the inhibitory effect on such costs in the western region was not significant.⑤ Mechanism testing indicated that digital village construction reduced carbon emission abatement costs in agriculture and rural areas by optimizing the agricultural factor allocation and promoting income growth.Therefore,it is necessary to scientifically formulate policies for green and low-carbon agricultural development to ensure the co-ordinated promotion of food security and agricultural carbon abatement.We should deepen the implementation of digital village devel-opment initiatives and increase efforts to explore new forms of rural industries.Furthermore,we should build a multi-level voluntary car-bon trading market and enrich the pathways for realizing the value of agricultural and rural carbon sink resources.
