Abstract

To address the deficiency of overestimating rock tensile strength based on peak load in ring splitting tests,splitting tests were conducted on sandstone ring specimens with different inner-to-outer diameter ratios(0.2,0.3,0.4,0.5,0.6).Three methods(acoustic emission,strain gauges and digital image correlation technology)were used to capture the crack initiation point of tensile cracks,to improve the accuracy of ring splitting tests for testing rock tensile strength.Brazilian splitting and direct tensile tests were conducted on sandstone to verify the accuracy of the tensile strength determined in ring splitting tests.The results show that the crack initiation load decreases with the increase of the inner-to-outer diameter ratio.When the inner-to-outer diameter ratios are 0.5 and 0.6,the tensile strength calculated based on the crack initiation load is close to the direct tensile strength(with the minimum relative deviation of only 3.3%).The ring-splitting test based on the crack initiation point is a reliable method for testing the indirect tensile strength of soft rocks.
