Diagnosis and treatment of esophageal foreign body obstruction in dogs by the combination of traditional Chinese veterinary medicine and western veterinary medicine

Abstract
Esophageal foreign body obstruction is a mechanical obstruction caused by foreign body retention in the esophageal cavity.The main clinical symptoms are difficulty swallowing,drooling,and vomiting,and in severe cases,it can lead to esophageal perforation.The treatment for esophageal foreign body obstruction requires endoscopic assisted retrieval or shell surgery based on the location and degree of obstruction of the foreign body.Symptomatic treatment is required after surgery.A 6-month-old French bulldog was diagnosed with esophageal foreign body obstruction after clinical examination and imaging examination due to frequent vomiting and lack of appetite.After surgical removal of the foreign body,the dog was treated with intravenous support therapy for 3 days.However,the dog still had no appetite and still experienced nausea after receiving a small amount of water.Barium meal imaging and open abdominal exploration showed no abnormalities;X-ray examination showed gastric distension.The dog was diagnosed with spleen dysfunction and stomach Qi stagnation by traditional Chinese veterinary medicine,moxibustion was applied to Mingmen(DU 4),Shenshu(BL 23),Baihui(DU 20),and Zusanli(ST 36)acupoints once daily for 20 minutes,to warm the kidneys,promote Yang,and regulate Qi flow,combined with pig bone and radish soup by gavage to warm and nourish the deficiency,promote Qi circulation and reduce bloat.After 1 day,excess gas was expelled from the body,and after 3 days,the patient could eat independently.Following up showed recovery of gastrointestinal function.This case can provide reference for the clinical treatment of esophageal foreign body obstruction in small animals.关键词
