The significance of establishing animal protection and welfare courses and the development of the case database
摘要
Abstract
Animal protection and welfare is a course designed to maintain the living environment of animals,fulfill their basic natural needs,and safeguard their health and happiness.This course holds significant importance in the realms of biodiversity conservation,sustainable development of animal husbandry,public health security,One Health initiatives,scientific ethics,among others.However,the content of this course can often be perceived as monotonous,leading to limited teaching effectiveness.The case teaching method has been shown to enhance students'abilities to analyze and solve problems effectively.Implementing a case-based approach for professional degree postgraduates represents a crucial aspect of contemporary educational reform.The case database for this course encompasses various topics including:the connotation and significance of animal protection and welfare;the relationship between animal welfare and livestock production;the interplay between animal protection/welfare and human health;evaluation methods for animal protection legislation;preservation of genetic resources in animals;welfare considerations for farm animals(both livestock and poultry);as well as protections afforded to laboratory animals and companion animals.This course will feature characteristic cases pertinent to graduate training in veterinary professional degrees.Key focal points include standardization practices concerning laboratory animals;pre-experimental demonstrations involving ethical considerations such as adherence to the"3R"principles(Replacement,Reduction,Refinement)during animal experiments;addressing welfare issues encountered in farm animal breeding processes;zoonotic diseases;food safety related to animal products;companion animal advocacy;along with efforts aimed at preserving local exemplary breeds from Anhui Province as essential teaching elements.By meticulously constructing this case database while emphasizing agricultural college characteristics alongside local attributes,we aim not only to improve classroom instruction efficacy,but also elevate graduate students'knowledge base and skill levels within this vital field.关键词
