Abstract

Infrared radiation characteristics of carbon fiber composites with aluminum flake particle filled coatings were investigated by rigorously solving the electromagnetic field using the Finite-difference time domain method(FDTD),and some important factors such as the volume fraction of aluminum flake particles,the particle size,the thickness of the coatings,and the imaginary part of the complex refractive index of the binder,were taken into account to determine the influence law of the infrared radiation characteristics of the composites.It is found that:as the volume fraction of aluminum flake particles increases,the emissivity of the composite material decreases,and the average emissivity in the atmospheric window ranges of 3-5 μm and 8-14 μm are both decreased significantly compared with that of the material without stealthy coating.Under the same volume fraction,the emissivity decreases firstly and then increases as the particle size increases.The effect of coating thickness on the emissivity of the material is relatively small.In addition,it is found that the refractive index imaginary part of the binder has a great influence on the infrared emissivity of the coating.An increase in the imaginary part of the binder significantly increases the emissivity of the material.The results show that the complex refractive index imaginary part of the binder is a non-negligible factor in the infrared stealth design,and the binder with small absorption in the atmospheric window band should be selected as much as possible in the design.At the same time,the increase of the particle volume fraction in the coating is an effective measure to achieve the reduction of emissivity.
