Characterization of particulate matter formation and associated interactions between inorganic species during co-combustion of pulverized straw with sewage sludge

Abstract

Aiming at the co-combustion behaviors of two typical non-woody biomass(straw)with municipal sewage sludge(SS),wheat straw(WS)and rice straw(RS)were blended with SS respectively at different ra-tios(5%,10%,20%and 30%),then burned in a drop tube furnace to characterize particulate matter(PM)generations and to explore inorganic species interactions between different biomass during ash formation.The results show that straws blended with SS are beneficial to decrease PM mass concentrations,especially submi-cron particles(PM1)generations.This is attributed to gas-solid interaction of alkali capture by aluminosili-cates in SS,and gas-gas interaction of alkali sulfation.During co-combustion of straws with SS,PM1 reduc-tions of WS and RS are 41.14%-59.48%and 6.88%-32.36%,respectively.Supermicron particles(PM1-10)reductions of WS and RS are 31.87%-36.92%and 30.99%-57.84%,respectively.Owing to interactions,the elemental compositions of PM1 and small-sized PM1-10 change during co-combustion of straws with SS,which results that the K,Cl and S mass concentrations in PM decrease with increasing SS blending ratios,lowering the propensities of deposition and corrosion.
