Anti-tumor effects of podophyllotoxin and its derivatives

Abstract
Malignant tumors have become an important public health problem of threatening human health and life.Malignant tumors treatment are mainly treated by comprehensive treatment,and chemotherapy is one of the main methods.Podophyllotoxin and its derivatives are recognized as pharmaco-active compounds with various pharmacological activities,especially antitumor effects.Etoposide,for example,is used as a first-line chemotherapy agent for the treatment of various cancers due to its superior anticancer activity.However,podophyllotoxin and its naturally occurring homologues have low bioavailability,and almost all early discoveries in this class cause systemic toxicity and drug resistance.Therefore,researchers are focusing on the development of highly effective and low-toxic derivatives of podophyllotoxin.Current pharmacological studies in vitro and in vivo have confirmed the antitumor potential of podophyllotoxin and its derivatives.Follow-up studies need to further verify its efficacy through clinical trials,and further explore its targets and mechanisms,so as to provide scientific basis for clinical translation.关键词
