Abstract

To meet the demand for the estimation of oil tanker ballast draft,the applicability and limitation conditions of the current methods were systematically analyzed,including the navigation empirical formula,the formula recommended by Shanghai Ship and Shipping Research Institute,and the calculation method of longitudinal windward area.The above methods were weak in the selection of parameters and the adaptability of ship forms.Based on the draft tons per centimeter specified in General Design Code for Seaport and the empirical data on the ballast deadweight tonnage,an estimation method for the ballast draft of oil tanker was proposed,which served as a reference for the estimation of ballast draft value in the process of port engineering design.As a comprehensive indicator,The deadweight tonnage could effectively represent the characteristics of ship forms.Through calculating and verifying the data on part of ships,the above method can be used for the estimation subject to limited ship parameters.In addition,the research revealed that the existing codes didn't cover all ship forms or match the assurance rates,thus it was recommended to increase the number of samples and supplement more ballast draft parameters in the process of subsequent revision of codes.
