Advances in physical therapy for depression

Abstract
Depression is a common mental disorder,and although medication is currently the most mainstream treatment,approximately 30%of patients exhibit resistance to drug therapy,eventually developing into medication-refractory major depressive disorder and treatment-resistant depression.Physical therapy,as an adjunct to pharmacological treatment,holds significant potential and has become a research focus in the field of mental health.This paper classifies physical therapies into four categories,electrical stimulation,magnetic stimulation,light stimulation,and sound stimulation,and elaborates on each in detail.Electrical stimulation techniques,such as electroconvulsive therapy and deep brain stimulation,can alleviate depressive symptoms by modulating brain neural networks.Magnetic stimulation,particularly repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation,has also shown favorable outcomes in the treatment of TRD.Light stimulation mainly alleviates depressive symptoms by regulating circadian rhythms and neurotransmitter levels,while blue light and near-infrared laser therapy have gained attention in recent years.Sound stimulation,especially low-frequency transcranial ultrasound stimulation,has demonstrated potential in improving cognitive function and mood.Despite the promising role of physical therapy in treating depression,its precision,personalized treatment plans,and convenience of administration still require further enhancement.Future research directions include leveraging genetic information,biomarkers,and multimodal brain imaging technologies to further improve treatment accuracy and accessibility,enabling broader application of physical therapy in the clinical management of depression.关键词
