Industry Agglomeration:Spatial Force Empowering Enterprise Digital Transfor-mation

Abstract
Accelerating the digital transformation of enterprises is not only an inevitable trend under the backdrop of a new round of technological revolution and industrial transformation,but also an important driving force for achieving sustainable high-quality economic development.However,the digital transformation process of enterprises generally faces practical difficulties,such as lacking of"courage","way","capacity"and"willingness"to transform,which urgently requires exploring effective transformation paths and driving factors.Therefore,exploring the practical paths and influencing factors for digital transformation of enterprises is currently a priority for promoting high-quality development of enterprises.Industrial agglomeration,this"spatial dynamics",has become an important force driving local economic growth in China,playing a crucial role in the country's economic development.At the same time,through positive externalities,such as sharing input resources,enhancing matching efficiency,and closely facilitating technological exchanges and collaborative innovations,industrial agglomeration can empower the development of internal enterprises.However,there is currently a lack of literature exploring the influencing factors of enterprise digital transformation from a meso-industrial perspective.Therefore,investigating how industrial agglomeration affects enterprise digital transformation is of significant practical significance and theoretical research value for further promoting high-quality development of enterprises. Based on a generalized analysis of industrial agglomeration theory and its resulting"spatial dynamics",this paper takes annual unbalanced panel data from A-share listed manufacturing companies from 2011 to 2020 as a sample to examine the mechanisms by which manufacturing agglomeration influences the digital transformation of enterprises and validate its impact mechanisms.Furthermore,it analyzes whether this effect can synergize with government support to jointly promote enterprise transformation.Additionally,the paper explores the asymmetric characteristics of its enabling effects from the perspectives of enterprise nature and urban characteristics.Finally,it proposed suggestions for reference based on the aforementioned analysis and empirical results. The empirical result indicates that the agglomeration of the manufacturing industry can positively empower the digital transformation of enterprises.This conclusion remains valid even after considering endogeneity issues and conducting various robustness checks.Further analysis shows that the agglomeration of the manufacturing industry can work in synergy with government policy support to encourage enterprises to engage in transformation activities.Heterogeneity analysis reveals that non-state-owned enterprises,high-tech enterprises,small enterprises,and those located in high-level urban agglomerations,regions with developed digital inclusive finance,and areas with intense market competition can better leverage the positive externalities of agglomeration to drive their own digital transformation comparatively.Mechanism analysis indicates that agglomeration can facilitate enterprises in undergoing digital transformation by sharing transformation resources,enhancing matching efficiency,and promoting mechanisms for knowledge learning diffusion. Based on the above-mentioned conclusion,this paper puts forward precise suggestions from the perspectives of industry,governments,and enterprises.To sum up,in the context of multiple challenges facing digital transformation,giving full play to the strengths of industrial agglomeration and building a spatial dynamic mechanism that enables enterprises to digital transformation is an effective way to achieve high-quality developmentof enterprises.关键词
