Abstract

In recent years,a significant number of state-owned enterprises,technology leaders,and specialized innovative enterprises have engaged in collaborative innovation by joining innovation consortia.The industry-university-research integration led by enterprises plays a crucial supporting role in China's scientific research,the transformation of scientific and technological achievements,and the innovation-driven development strategy.However,the academic research in this field is still in its early stages,with relatively few studies focusing on the process mechanisms of deep integration of industry-university-research led by enterprises.The interaction mechanisms between universities and enterprises during this process and the role mechanisms of enterprise leadership remain unclear. This paper adopts a theoretical perspective based on boundary crossing and selects multiple-case samples from Xi'an Jiaotong University's joint research institute to explore the mechanism logic behind"how industry-academia-research collaboration achieves deep integration under enterprise leadership"using an exploratory research method.The study finds that:(1)The university-enterprise joint research institute is a kind of"boundary organization"established on the"relative boundary"between universities and enterprises.Both sides conduct cross-border cooperation practices through the"boundary organization",which not only mitigates the direct conflicts of different institutional rules but also provides a suitable platform for establishing the formal institutions for both sides.(2)The process of deep integration of industry-university-research led by enterprises is actually the power allocation process where universities and enterprises mutually authorize each other to facilitate the integration of internal and external organizational structures.There are five core power types:resource power,network power,process power,evaluating power,and achievements transforming power.(3)The process of deep integration of industry-university-research led by enterprises can be classified into three development phases:the relationship establishment stage based on project cooperation,the strategic cooperation stage based on resource integration,and the deep integration stage based on value co-creation.Each type of power exerts a diverse function in the three stages. Compared with previous literature,this paper makes two contributions:first,by identifying the role and function of joint research institutes as boundary organizations in cross-boundary cooperation between universities and enterprises,it constructs a bi-directional organizational boundary crossing model based on boundary organizations,enriching relevant research in this field.Second,the traditional structural-oriented view of power treats power as a predetermined structure or resource within an organization used to break through existing boundaries and drive organizational innovation.Under this perspective,organizational boundaries are relatively static.This paper argues that organizations have both relatively static"absolute boundaries"and dynamically changing"relative boundaries."During the process of deep integration between industry,academia,and research led by enterprises,not only do boundary-crossers need to leverage their power base to overcome limitations imposed by"absolute boundaries,"but they also need to create cooperative spaces within"relative boundaries"through self-empowerment and empowerment of others.Based on this,the study expands related research on power configuration by summarizing five dimensions of power allocation in the process of deep integration between industry,academia,and research led by enterprises through multi-case analysis. This study provides valuable exploration into the power allocation and role mechanisms in the process of deep integration of industry-university-research led by enterprises,offering new theoretical perspectives for research in this area.It has practical value in addressing issues such as insufficient initiative of enterprises in participating in innovation consortia and unclear paths for high-quality enterprise development through deep integration of industry,academia,and research promoted by innovation consortia.
