Effects of Exogenous Selenium on Agronomic Traits,Seed Quality,and Folate Content of Foxtail Millet

Abstract
To investigate the effects of different concentrations of exogenous selenium on agronomic traits,grain quality and folate content of foxtail millet at the jointing,heading,and filling stages,this study aimed to clarify the optimal spraying amount of sodium selenite for foxtail millet and provide a theoretical basis and technical support for the breeding and cultivation of high-quality functional mil-let.Four foxtail millet varieties'Jinuomi2''Yugu18''Changsheng 13'and'Zhonggu 15'were used as experimental materials.A randomized block experiment in the fields was conducted,with five sele-nium treatments[0 g/hm2 Na2SeO3(T0),16 g/hm2 Na2SeO3(T1),32 g/hm2 Na2SeO3(T2),64 g/hm2 Na2SeO3(T3),128 g/hm2 Na2SeO3(T4)]at the jointing,heading,and filling stages to inves-tigate the effects of different selenium concentrations on agronomic traits,grain quality and folate content of foxtail millet.The results showed that the plant height,leaf area,stem diameter and spike traits(length below the internode,spike length and spike width)of the four foxtail millet varieties were significantly different from the control when different concentrations of exogenous selenium were applied to the leaf surface.Additionally,the thousand-seed mass of'Zhonggu 15'differed significant-ly from the control.With the increase in selenium content,the agronomic traits showed a trend of first increasing and then decreasing,reaching their peak values in the T2 and T3 treatments.Exogenous se-lenium increased the contents of protein,crude fat,crude fiber,and crude ash in the four foxtail mil-let varieties,with each nutrient component peaking at the selenium treatment concentrations of T2 and T3;the increase in crude fat content was the most pronounced.Compared with the control,the contents of methionine,tryptophan,threonine,isoleucine,and valine in the four foxtail millet varie-ties increased following selenium treatment,with amino acid content reaching its highest in the T2 and T3 treatments.The folic acid content of the four foxtail millet varieties significantly increased by 5.15%,6.50%,8.16%and 8.20%compared with the control,respectively,with the increase in fo-lic acid content of'Changsheng 13'and'Zhonggu 15'being higher than that of'Jinuomi 2'and'Yu-gu 18'.The appropriate concentration of exogenous selenium sprayed on the leaf surface significantly improves the agronomic traits,grain quality,and folic acid content of foxtail millet.The optimal con-centrations for foliar spraying of selenium are found to be 32 g/hm2 and 64 g/hm2 Na2SeO3.关键词
