The Enlightenment of Reason and the New Enlightenment
摘要
Abstract
The essence of the debate between Hamann and Kant on the Enlightenment is two different views of life and reason.Kant insisted on the rationalist position of the English and French Enlightenment,and continued to promote and improve the rationalist Enlightenment.Hamann believed that the enlightenment only pursues the satisfaction of hobbies and desires,and only self-love,but self-love is premised on self-knowledge,relying solely on our reason,and cannot help to understand ourselves,and self-knowledge is only possible from the perspective of the divine.Hamann proposed that life,language,and history are organic wholes that undergo a generative process like a seed to a tree.On this basis,he opposed rationalism's dismemberment and mechanized interpretation of life,as well as Kant's purification of reason and dualism,and demanded a new path of enlightenment in which reason and faith are in harmony.Therefore the debate between Hamann and Kant on the Enlightenment was not only based on academic arguments,but also on the living situation and the different understanding of Prussian reality.Kant hoped that each individual,including the king,would use his own reason consciously,while Hamann condemned the Prussian king's despotism and petulance on the basis of the belief that was higher than reason.Hamann's criticism of the Enlightenment and its new view of life,language,and history through Herder and Goethe influenced the Storming movement and Romanticism.关键词
