The Diachronic Evolution of the transitivity of the Verb She(射)

Abstract
In the history of Chinese language,the meaning of She(射),representing"shooting arrows",has remained largely unchanged,while its grammatical characteristics have undergone diachronic evolution,primarily manifested in the continuously increasing transitivity:1)From the Oracle Inscriptions to the Zhou and Qin-Han Dynasties,there was a shift from predominantly intransitive usage to transitive usage gaining dominance.Within this transition,there emerged a tendency for the target objects of She(射)to expand their semantic scope from primarily animate nouns to inanimate ones,alongside a rare appearance of direct objects indicating distinction,such as Arrow distinctive.Since the Wei-Jin dynasties,particularly in Early Modern Chinese,there has been an increase in the usage of She(射)with direct objects denoting Arrow distinctive and Arrow categorical,alongside the emergence of a di-transitive usage and its integration within the Ba(把)/Bei(被)sentence structure.The inherent semantic structure and broad semantic domain of She(射),acting as internal factors,combined with external factors such as the demand for precise expression,high-frequency usage,and the evolving trend of Chinese disyllabification,collectively influence the evolution of its transitive capacity.关键词
