Harmonizing Yin and Yang and Staged Treatment of Primary Retinitis Pigmentosa

Abstract
Primary Retinitis Pigmentosa(RP)is a hereditary fundus disease that can lead to blindness.Based on the principle of combining disease and syndrome,CHAO Guojun proposed a syndrome differentiation and treatment system for RP that harmonizes Yin and Yang and adopts a staged treatment approach,according to the pathological process and the evolution of syndromes in RP.CHAO Guojun believes that the pathogenesis of this disease evolves from deficiency to a mixture of deficiency and excess,and summarizes the disease into two syndrome types:Spleen-kidney Yang deficiency and liver-kidney Yin deficiency,with treatment divided into early and late stages.For patients with spleen-kidney Yang deficiency,the treatment principle is to tonify spleen Qi and warm kidney Yang,with particular emphasis on using sweet and warm Chinese medicines to strengthen spleen and boost Qi,thereby reinforcing spleen and kidney.For patients with liver-kidney Yin deficiency,the treatment principle is to nourish kidney,replenish essence,and clear liver heat,advocating the use of a large amount of seed-based Chinese medicines to enrich kidney Yin essence.In the early stage of the disease,the pathological nature is primarily deficiency,and the treatment focuses on strengthening spleen,warming kidney,nourishing kidney,and tonifying liver,while also incorporating blood-activating,stasis-removing,and collateral-dredging Chinese medicines to prevent disease progression.In the late stage,the pathological nature is a mixture of deficiency and excess,and the treatment includes Qi-moving,blood-breaking,phlegm-resolving,and turbidity-eliminating Chinese medicines as appropriate.关键词
