Agricultural industrial organizations,retail market proximity,and farmers'ecological production behaviors

Abstract
Given the increasingly constrained agricultural production resources and rising pollution in agriculture,it is of great signifi-cance to innovate agricultural industrial organizations so that members can effectively benefit from them.Such innovation is essential for encouraging agricultural households to adopt ecological production behaviors and promote green agricultural development.However,in practice,even when farmers join agricultural industrial organizations,proximity to retail markets often leads to redirecting their agri-cultural products to such markets.Unfortunately,price gouging behavior and adverse selection in retail markets tend to reduce farmers'willingness to adopt ecological practices,which hinders ecological environment improvement.Therefore,through introducing the moder-ating effect of retail market proximity,this study revealed the impact of agricultural industrial organizations on farmers'ecological pro-duction behaviors and its mechanisms by establishing a theoretical model of farmers'ecological production behaviors decision-making in terms of economic benefits and social costs.Empirical tests were conducted using primary data of tea farmers in Jiangxi Province.Key findings revealed that:① Membership in agricultural industrial organizations had a significant promotion effect on farmers'ecologi-cal production behaviors,with perception effects(income,brand,and ecological effects)and behavioral norms(governmental training,role demonstration,as well as communication and interaction)serving as important mechanisms.② The proximity of farmers to the re-tail market exhibited an inverted U-shaped moderating effect in the impact of farmers'membership in the agricultural industrial organi-zations on their ecological production behaviors.While organizational membership promoted ecological production behaviors among farmers located closer to the retail markets,this positive effect gradually diminished as the distance from retail markets increased.③ The combined effect between retail market proximity and agricultural industrial organizations was more pronounced for farmers locat-ed along national highways,younger farmers,and those belonging to risk-averse types.Based on these findings,this study recommends that farmers should be actively guided to join agricultural industrial organizations to enhance both endogenous motivation and external drivers for developing ecological production behaviors.Furthermore,policy implementation should adhere to government support and market guidance,and leverage farmers'risk-averse tendency to carry out moderate-scale operations in areas with inconvenient transpor-tation and aging rural populations.关键词
