Abstract

In the context of the rapid development of social media and digital technologies,the nature of tourism has shifted from traditional travel experiences to unique opportunities for identity formation and expression.Particularly under the influence of social media,the phenomenon of checking in at trendy destinations has increasingly become a defining characteristic of modern tourism.Draw-ing on media pilgrimage,identity identification,and social cognitive theory,this paper employed Python technology to extract posts relat-ed to checking in at popular destinations in Beijing from Xiaohongshu as the data source.Using grounded theory,this paper explored in-depth the identity imagination and identification processes of tourists checking in at trendy destinations,as well as the mechanisms behind these formations.The findings suggested that social media,as a powerful source of information and inspiration,significantly alters individuals' perceptions of tourism,value expectations,and emotional experiences at trendy destinations.Before traveling,user-genera-ted content on social media shaped individuals' tourism expectations and identity imagination about these destinations.During travel,the interaction between tourists and the social media-presented images of trendy destinations strengthened the formation and adjustment of identity identification,facilitating identity transformation.After traveling,tourists re-evaluated and affirmed their experiences at trendy destinations by sharing and reflecting on social media.This process not only reviewed the tourism experience but also deeply reflected on and solidifies personal identity.
