Niche and interspecific association of dominant species in tree layer of broad-leaved evergreen forests on the western slope of the Cangshan mountain

Abstract
[Objective]In order to understand the ecological niche characteristics and interspecific relationships of dominant tree species in the evergreen broad-leaved forest stratum on the west slope of Cangshan mountain,and to reveal the ecological niche width and overlap characteristics of dominant species,in order to further comprehend the coexistence mechanisms and succession patterns of community species,and to provide a scientific basis for forest resource protection and management.[Method]Based on plot survey data,this study focused on the dominant populations of the tree layer in the evergreen broad-leaved forest on the west slope of Cangshan mountain.The Levins index,Shannon-Wiener index,Pianka index,and Schoener index were used to analyze the ecological niche width,overlap,and similarity of the dominant tree species.Additionally,methods such as variance ratio,x2 test,interspecific connectivity coefficient,and Spearman rank correlation test were employed to analyze connectivity characteristics.[Result]1)The dominant tree species in the evergreen broad-leaved forest on the west slope of Cangshan mountain include Vaccinium bracteatum,Alnus nepalensis,Rhododendron irroratum,Rhododendron delavayi,Schima argentea and Castanopsis orthacantha;2)Among the 190 species pairs formed by the 20 dominant species,Vaccinium bracteatum has the largest ecological niche width,while Schima argentea has the smallest,with an average ecological niche width of 0.18.The majority of species pairs have low ecological niche overlap,indicating a high degree of differentiation among dominant tree populations;3)The overall interspecific relationships among the dominant tree species in the tree layer are positive,but a significant portion also show negative relationships,with indistinct differences,suggesting that the connectivity among dominant species is not tight,and some species are in a relatively loose state of interspecific connectivity.[Conclusion]The evergreen broad-leaved forest on the west slope of Cangshan mountain is generally in a relatively stable stage of late succession.Vaccinium bracteatum has the highest frequency and ecological niche width,and possesses strong resource utilization capabilities and environmental adaptability,which helps maintain community stability.The majority of dominant tree species pairs on the west slope of Cangshan mountain have low ecological niche overlap,indicating a high degree of ecological niche differentiation among dominant tree species,weak interspecific competition,relatively independent distribution of dominant species,and more stable interspecific relationships.In future vegetation restoration processes,species with positive connectivity and low ecological niche overlap values can be supplemented to fully utilize the unique ecological environment resources of Cangshan to form a more stable forest community.关键词
