Abstract

To screen peanut lines suitable for mechanical harvesting,a total of 105 breeding lines were employed for measurement of peg tensile force(PTF).Results showed that the PTF displayed continuous and wide variation with the mean PTF ranging from 10.7 to 28.4 N.Majority lines,with a proportion of 47.6%of total lines,exhibited PTFs ranging from 14.6 to 18.4 N.It was found that the sowing season was an important factor influencing PTF.Compared to sowing in spring,sowing in summer could significantly improve the PTF.Whether application of N fertilizers or not was not a critical factor affecting PTF variation.No significant correlation was detected between PTF and three plant architecture traits of plant height,primary branch length and branch number.Moreover,it was confirmed that the significant correlation between two PTF descriptors(maximum and mean PTFs)with percentage of shed pods(PSP).Based on the PTF descriptors and PSP,8 breeding lines with low PSP(PSP<2.5%)and excellent performance were mined,which provided desirable breeding materi-als for improving the mechanical harvesting efficiency.
