Abstract

Objective To explore the relationship between depression and potential categories of coping styles among high school students.Methods A survey was conducted on 1 640 high school students by using the middle school students'coping styles scale and the center for epidemiologic studies depression scale(CES-D).Based on the scores across different dimensions of coping styles,a latent profile model was established to analyze the potential categories of coping styles among high school students.The BCH method was used to compare the depression levels of high school students who adopted different categories of coping styles based on their CES-D scores.Results The coping styles of high school students could be divided into four potential categories:negative avoidance(22%),positive action(21%),negative balance(34%),and conflict action(23%).There were significant differences in the CES-D scores of students who adopted different coping styles(P<0.001),with students adopting positive action having the lowest CES-D score and those with negative avoidance having the highest CES-D score.Conclusion The potential categories of coping styles have a significant impact on depression among high school students.High school students should be guided to choose positive coping styles to promote their mental health development.
