Effects of deep eutectic solvents pretreatment on wood properties of Alnus japonica wood

Abstract
When modifying or enhancing wood,poor permeability often hinders the penetration of most modification agents,resulting in suboptimal outcomes.Traditional pretreatment methods struggle with this challenge.In contrast,pretreatment with deep eutectic solvents(DES)can effectively react with lignin in the wood cell walls,significantly enhancing permeability.This innovative approach has attracted considerable attention for its potential to address the limitations of conventional methods.In this study,North American alder wood(Alnus japonica)was treated with a DES system composed of choline chloride and lactic acid(ChCl-LA).An orthogonal experiment was conducted to investigate its effects on wood properties.The results indicated that,after DES pretreatment,the oven-dry density of the specimens decreased by 9.0%,suggesting a notable reduction in wood mass.The water absorption increased by 42.1%,highlighting an enhanced ability to take up water.Additionally,the water absorption volume change ratio decreased by 3.9%,indicating improved dimensional stability.The hygroscopic moisture content decreased by 1.5%,and the average hygroscopic volume change ratio decreased by 10%,further demonstrating enhanced stability in varying humidity conditions.However,the surface hardness decreased by 9.4%,suggesting reduced resistance to surface indentation and wear.These findings suggested that DES pretreatment removed some lignin and hemicellulose,crucial structural components of wood,leading to a loss of mass.This removal not only enhanced water absorption permeability and improved dimensional stability,but also reduced surface hardness.Infrared spectroscopy and scanning electron microscope(SEM)analyses provided deeper insights into these changes.The analysis demonstrated that DES pretreatment disrupted the structure of wood cell walls,causing thinning and increasing intercellular gaps.This structural alteration likely contributed to increased wood permeability,beneficial for further modification processes.This study underscores the simplicity and environmental friendliness of employing DES.The findings offer valuable insights for the efficient modification and utilization of North American alder wood.关键词
