Abstract

Hemp fibers have long been,and remain,a highly sought-after textile raw material due to their exceptional mechanical strength,excellent air permeability,antibacterial properties,and other outstanding characteristics.Degumming is a crucial process for the direct extraction of fibers from hemp,enabling their effective utilization in textile production.However,it has posed significant challenges for industry.Traditional degumming methods,despite years of application,face significant challenges in achieving cost-effectiveness.These methods require substantial amounts of expensive chemical reagents,energy,and labor,which significantly reduce profitability.From an environmental perspective,the use of corrosive and toxic reagents endanger poses risks to workers safety and contributes to environmental pollution.Additionally,in terms of fiber quality,inadequate process control often leads to excessive fiber damage.In this study,we developed a low-cost and environmentally friendly acidic co-solvent comprised of chloride,citric acid,and hydrogen peroxide.This co-solvent effectively facilitated the extraction of high-length,strong,and carboxylated hemp fibers under mild conditions.Furthermore,we investigated the synergistic mechanisms of the acidic co-solvent concerning degumming efficiency,cellulose polymerization degree,and carboxylation extent.Subsequently,through vapor deposition,the pyrrole monomer was polymerized onto hemp fibers as the substrate,resulting in the preparation of flexible conductive sensing fibers characterized by high load capacity and uniform distribution of load.The results demonstrated that the acidic co-solvent achieved a lignin removal rate of approximately 86%at 80℃after 1 h.This process produced hemp fibers with significant length(up to 1 m),a high degree of polymerization(2 536),a carboxylation level of 0.30 mmol/g,and remarkable tensile strength(500 MPa).In contrast to the traditional alkaline degumming method,the conditions of the developed method were both gentler and more efficient,facilitating the simultaneous carboxylation modification of hemp fibers during the degumming process.Furthermore,the conductive polymer loading of hemp fibers prepared by this method can reach 43.85%,with a conductivity of 9.6 mS/m,exhibiting significant resistance changes under varying pressures.Compared to the traditional alkaline method,the pyrrole loading was increased by 30%,while the electrical conductivity experienced a remarkable enhancement of 31 times.All in all,the green acidic co-solvent developed in this study offers a highly effective means of producing high-quality hemp fibers with outstanding properties under mild conditions.This method addresses the limitations of traditional hemp fiber processing by significantly reducing production costs and environmental impact.Furthermore,it broadens the potential applications of hemp fibers,enabling their use in advanced and high-end fields,such as flexible conductive sensing fabrics.This innovation offers a promising pathway for the future development of the intelligent textile industry.
