Preparation of wood-derived laser-induced graphene catalyzed by iron ion and its seawater desalination properties

Abstract
Facing the increasingly growing shortage of freshwater resources,the solar driven desalination has become a promising solution that has attracted wide attention.As an environmentally friendly and renewable energy source,solar energy offers a sustainable and efficient means of driving the evaporation of seawater into fresh water.However,many current photothermal materials rely on synthetic polymers,which are often not environmentally friendly,costly and complicated to produce.Therefore,it is crucial to develop a green,cost-effective substrate for photothermal materials.Wood is one of the most abundant biomass materials in nature,which is sustainable,widely distributed and low-cost.Besides,it possesses natural hydrophilic porous structure and low thermal conductivity,which could transport water in a targeted manner effectively and reduce heat loss to bulk water,respectively.Thus,wood has attracted more and more attention as the substrate for solar-driven evaporator in recent years.In this study,basswood that has uniform structure was selected as the raw material.It was first dipped in the ethanol solution of ferric chloride,followed by laser ablation on its cross section.With the catalysis effect of iron ions,wood,which typically burns rather than converts into carbon under laser irradiation,can be successfully transformed into wood-derived laser-induced graphene(W-Fe-LIG)without the need for an inert gas.When the concentration of iron ion reached up to 0.1 mol/L,it showed enough catalytic effect on the laser induced graphitization of wood.Due to the synergistic photothermal effect of the porous LIG and its contained iron compounds,W-Fe-LIG showed an average light absorptivity of 92.74%in the wavelength range from 250 to 2 500 nm,and its surface temperature could rise to(84.8±1.0)℃under xenon lamp irradiation with a solar illumination intensity.Besides,the hydrophilic wood turned into hydrophobic after laser scanning.Therefore,a Jannus solar interface evaporator could be constituted of W-Fe-LIG as the photothermal layer and the lower porous hydrophobic basswood as the water pump layer as well as the insulation layer.The evaporation rate of the evaporator could reach up to 1.36 kg/(m2·h),and the evaporation efficiency was 79.3%under 1 sun irradiation(1 kW/m2).This study proposed an efficient,feasible method to prepare wood-based solar interface evaporator with excellent light absorption,which provided technical support and theoretical basis for the high-value utilization of wood and showed huge application prospect in alleviating the shortage of freshwater resources.关键词
