Abstract

Volatile sulfur compounds(VSCs),including carbonyl sulfide(COS),dimethyl sulfide(DMS),and carbon disulfide(CS2),play a pivotal role in the global sulfur cycle and climate regulation.The concentrations of COS,DMS and CS2 in the seawater and overlying atmosphere of the Eastern Indi-an Ocean were measured from March to May 2022.Moreover,their correlations with relevant environ-mental factors were analyzed,and their sea-to-air fluxes were estimated.The average concentrations(range)of COS,DMS,and CS2 in the surface seawater of the Eastern Indian Ocean in spring were 0.036(0.78~4.39),2.23(0.016~0.064),and 0.028(0.001~0.069)nmol·L-1,respectively,and their average concentrations(ranges)in the atmosphere were 591.6(287.5~1 749.5),36.8(12.4~161.5),and 181.3(2.0~698.0)pptv,respectively.In the study area,the horizontal distribution of COS,DMS,and CS2 showed a decreasing trend from the north to the south,from the east to the west,with high levels of all three VSCs occurring around the Bay of Bengal and its adjacent waters.The aver-age(ranges)sea-to-air fluxes of COS,DMS,and CS2 were 0.001(0.063~0.099),2.83(0.17~10.00),and 0.032(0.00~0.083)μmol·m-2·d-1,respectively,indicating that the Eastern Indian Ocean was a net source of atmospheric COS,DMS,and CS2 during the survey period.Furthermore,correlation analysis showed that the atmospheric distribution of DMS and CS2 was positively correlated with wind speed in the central area,which is a key factor controlling their atmospheric distribution.However,DMS was negatively correlated with seawater salinity and did not show a significant correla-tion with chlorophyll a(Chl a).
