Abstract

Radiation sterilization is widely used for sterilizing foods,biochemicals,medical devices,and leads to form an artificial irradiation environment with the equipped cobalt-60 source.To explore the impact of irradiation on microbial communities,this study employed 16S rRNA gene sequencing,microbial isola-tion,and resistance assays to investigate both uncultured and cultured microorganisms in an artificial irradia-tion environment.The results revealed a diverse bacterial community subjected to long-term gamma irradia-tion was unveiled to occur in such an environment.The dominant phyla included Proteobacteria,Actinobacte-ria,Cyanobacteria.Compared with the samples from a non-irradiated control site,the bacterial communities were obviously different both in composition and abundance.Further,the alpha diversity of the bacterial com-munity from the gamma irradiation environment was less than that from the non-radiation environment.Meanwhile,142 bacterial strains were isolated from the irradiated environment,belonging to 25 genera mainly distributed across three phyla of Firmicutes,Proteobacteria and Actinobacteria.Most of the isolates drogen peroxide.In conclusion,our results indicate that the artificial irradiation is able to influence microbial composition and abundance,serving as a critical selective pressure that promotes the evolution of radioresis-tance as well as the oxidative stress-resistant traits in bacteria.
