Abstract

The Hami East Station is the first technical operation station of the Urumqi Railway Bureau in connection with the Hohhot and the Lanzhou Railway Bureaus.Currently,it operates as a two-level four-yard station with limited train marshalling capacity.However,several challenges exist in its current operational framework,including excessive grouping configurations,insufficient capacity of shunting and arrival-departure tracks,and the absence of a downlink marshalling system.These issues result in inefficient workflows and low vehicle turnover efficiency,and constraints on track section capacity,making it unable to meet the increasing demands for coal transportation from Xinjiang,as well as the import and export train services.Based on an analysis of Hami East Section Station's operational saturation and its existing challenges,a capacity enhancement strategy was proposed.Firstly,this study employed a comparative analysis and trend extrapolation method to evaluate the operational workloads across major marshalling yards of the whole line,assess the technical station layout along the Lanzhou-Xinjiang corridor,and examine the distribution of technical stations within the Urumqi Bureau.It concluded that Hami East Station should be upgraded and expanded into a bidirectional marshalling yard system.Secondly,considering the existing station layout,two expansion schemes were proposed:a three-level six-yard scheme and a two-level six-yard hybrid scheme.A qualitative analysis of operational workflows and construction transition strategies was conducted,along with a quantitative comparison of engineering volume.This study recommended the three-level six-yard scheme for smoother operations,minimized redundant construction,and better transition.Finally,the study defined the division of responsibilities and service scope among the three technical stations under the Urumqi Bureau after the reconstruction of Hami East Station.The expansion of Hami East Station can effectively alleviate capacity constraints in western Urumqi.It can further enhance freight operation efficiency,reinforce the strategic role of technical stations in supporting intermediate stations,improve resilience against extreme weather such as strong winds,and maximize the buffering function of technical stations,aligning with the national strategy for sustainable development by improving operational efficiency and optimizing freight transportation quality.
