Emergency Epidemiological Investigation on an Outbreak of Porcine Diarrhea in a Large-scale Farm

Abstract
On December 13,2023,diarrhea appeared in some productive sows in swine farm A,and then spread to farrowing houses,making a large number of piglets die.In order to find out the causes,and to assess the risk of disease transmission,the outbreak was investigated by on-site interview,checking production files and laboratory testing.The results showed that the outbreak lasted 35 days,involving 639 infected sows,1 170 dead or eliminated piglets,with an attack rate of 34.5%in sows;the outbreak was confirmed to be caused by sows infected with porcine epidemic diarrhea virus(PEDV)according to clinical symptoms and laboratory testing,it was more likely that the pathogen was introduced through introduction of breeding pigs,and attacked the pigs with inapparent infection due to changes of environment temperature and operators.The virus was spread within the farm due to wrong anti-feeding,irregular transfer of sows,movement of personnel between pigpens and poisonous air flowing back into pigpens;the outbreak was effectively controlled through designating an operator to pigpens for management,closing draught fans and other countermeasures.In conclusion,farms were recommended to avoid any occurrence of entry outbreak through ensuring the health of the introduced breeding pigs via strengthening management on introduction of such pigs,and strengthening personnel management to improve their level of feeding management.关键词
