Contamination and Antimicrobial Resistance of Avian Pathogenic Escherichia coli in Fresh Meat Products in Some Areas of Shandong Province

Abstract
Avian pathogenic Escherichia coli(APEC)is one of major pathogens in broiler farming and slaughtering,and also an important zoonotic foodborne pathogen.In order to identify the contamination and antimicrobial resistance of APEC in fresh meat products in retail markets of Shandong Province,203 fresh meat samples of livestock and poultry were collected from 6 cities including Qingdao,Yantai,Weifang,Binzhou,Liaocheng and Dongying City,for bacterial isolation and identification,followed by virulence gene identification of the isolates using PCR.E.coli carrying five virulence genes including hlyF,iroN,iutA,ompt and iss was determined as APEC,and their resistances to 17 antimicrobial drugs were then detected using agar dilution method.The results showed that 203 strains of E.coli were isolated from 203 samples,including APEC with the positive rate of 5.4%(11/203);the resistance rates of 11 APEC strains were the highest to florfenicol and ampicillin,both of which amounted to 90.91%(10/11),but the lowest to fosfomycin,only 9.09%(1/11),33.36%-81.82%to quinolone antimicrobials,and 45.45%-72.73%to cephalosporins;and resistances to three or more classes of drugs were observed in all APEC isolates.In conclusion,APEC contamination with multiple drug resistances was detected from fresh meat products in retail markets in Shandong Province,posing a potential threat to the safety of food for human consumption.A data reference was provided by the study for strengthening regulation of food safety and prudent use of anti-APEC drugs.关键词
